I am aware I have been fairly quiet of late. What can I say, I have been busy. Course, physio, work, training but most importantly of all my son has finished Primary school and after his summer holiday he will be off to secondary school. Although in itself the fact that he has finished school has not really added much to my own ‘workload’ (can’t really think of a better word) it has made me acutely aware of time – or more our perception of the lack of it. With this virtual ‘line in the sand’ marking the progress from young childhood to young adulthood it has really hit home that as time passes he simply won’t need me in quite the same way – I don’t mind admitting that I have shed a tear or two over this and is something I am still struggling to come to terms with – my little boy is growing up. All of those crappy meme’s that talk of a bucket full of cuddles that will run out – they are bloody true (and I laughed at them as much as anyone else).
It has led to me thinking back to many times throughout his life when I prioritised doing something else over spending time with him – that gym training session instead of going to the park, busy reading an article instead of sitting and reading together etc. Don’t get me wrong, I have a strong bond with my son and I spend most of my time with him but there are occasions when I think I made the wrong choice. I guess the point I am trying to make is don’t waste time. Almost everyone I know may take this as an indication of being productive etc – I don’t. Time can be wasted in many ways – I have made a conscious decision to not waste any of the time I have with my son – if I have things to do I will do them on my time, not his.
Go out and have some fun. I picked up an inflatable kayak recently – great fun. Not as good as a solid kayak but on a sunny day in the river (Exe) it was brilliant. This one from Amazon is an excellent deal (don’t forget to use the 20% discount code ‘summer20’). It may be possible to get GoOutdoors to match the discounted price that will make it even more of a bargain!
