The Commando Spirit: Could you apply it to your training?

The Commando Spirit of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines:

  1. Courage
  2. Determination
  3. Unselfishness
  4. Cheerfulness in the face of adversity

I am very proud of my roots as a Royal Marines Commando. We were taught to be gentlemen, to have honour, integrity, empathy and a host of other traits. However, it is the four elements of the Commando Spirit above that I think each and every person with a passion for fitness and a training goal could utilise.

From the courage to eat your meals from Tupperware boxes in your office despite the jeers from co-workers, to the determination to finish the last set of the last exercise after a long day at work when all you want to do is go home, to the unselfishness you can show a new gym goer by offering to explain why it is you are doing what you are doing and how it could help them despite already being behind schedule yourself, to the cheerfulness you have to show when you open your gym bag to realise you’ve yet again forgotten your towel and will have to dry yourself with your t-shirt.

Whether they apply in that sense or not, I am sure you can apply each and every one of the elements of the Commando Spirit to yourself and your life at some point.

Go on, train, think and live like a Commando. It’s a State of Mind.

Oh, one more thing. Commando’s treat other as they wish to be treated: so always put their weights away!
